The book “Al-Wasīlah al-Adabiyyah” (The Literary Way) by the distinguished scholar Ḥusayn al-Marṣafī, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, is one of the sources of modern Arab criticism, and it is one of the most significant books that shaped modern Arab tendency, developed critical concepts, and paved the way for generations.
His author was one of the remarkable scientific and literary phenomena in the nineteenth century, and his book marked a turning point in the field of modern literary criticism.
The lectures, given by the author to his students at Dar Al Ulum, represented the foundation of his book, “Al-Wasīlah al-Adabiyyah”; he arranged the first volume as an introduction to the literary arts, which he tackled in the second volume. Indeed, he started his book with definitions and divisions of the word “Al-Adab” (literature), then the definition of “Al-Lughah” (language), and then he discussed philology, letters of meaning, synonyms and contrast. He also talked about morphology and its divisions and branches, and ended the first volume with a conclusion that reveals the abundant culture of Al-Marsafi, his talents and renewed views. He used to urge his students to develop their knowledge to reach sophistication and keep abreast of everything new. Then the author later moved to discuss the knowledge of rhetorical sciences to reach the level of mastery in composition.
