Al-Mukhtasar fi Usul Al-Fiqh is an abridged book on the principles of the jurisprudence of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, written by Al-Hafiz Ibn Al-Lahham (752-803).
He wrote this book, explaining its symbols and ambiguities, but without delving into the reasons and evidence, with reference to the difference or consensus in some issues. Al-Hafiz Ibn Al-Lahham arranged the book according to the books of Islamic Jurisprudence (Ilm Al-Usul), and answered some of the questions that were brought to him about this science (i.e. Usul Al-Fiqh).
Al-Hafiz Ibn al-Lahham said in the introduction of the book:
"This is an abridged version on the principles of jurisprudence according to the doctrine of Imam Abi Abdullah Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, may Allah be pleased with him.
I have endeavoured to abridge it, edit it, clarify its symbols, but without delving into the reasons and evidence, pointing to disagreement and concord in most issues, arranging it in the order of the books of Islamic Jurisprudence, and answering the repeated questions of our scholar brothers. We ask Allah, glory be to Him, to make this book sincerely for His Sake, beneficial and right; to protect us and make us righteous, and grant us His Grace and Generosity."
