In his evangelical speech today, atheism is presented as an escape from illusion, a triumph of reason, and a source of immense joy for the heart. However, in reality, it is something else entirely, something frightening. It is a declaration of the death of the mind, soul, and hope. It is a victory for the barren end, and an eternal mourning for the soul; for nihilism's only harvest is misery.
In this book, atheism confronts itself in the mirror of its own cosmic vision. Facts and promises stand stark and clear in a world that rejects distortion and gratuitous embellishment. Here, atheism bears witness to itself through the words of its most prominent philosophers of recent centuries, and proclaims its true nature through the words of its most ardent Western defenders.
Here, the atheist is confronted with the claim of truth and coherence in his worldview, and stands before a large mirror that reveals the grandeur of features and the precision of details. He finds himself asking: is atheism a possible existential claim, or is it an illusion that cannot be lived and experienced?
