"Al-Bahr al-Muhit fi Usul al-Fiqh" (The Encompassing Sea in the Principles of Jurisprudence) is a book written by Imam Badr al-Din Muhammad ibn Bahadur al-Zarkashi (745-794 AH). This work is considered one of the most important books in the science of Usul al-Fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), and focuses particularly on the Shafi'i school of thought.
The book is characterized by a comprehensive methodology in presenting jurisprudential issues, where it presents the opinions of scholars arranged in groups and balances between them. The author mentions the evidence and critiques it, explains the reasons for disagreement, and weighs and evaluates the different opinions.
Al-Zarkashi did not limit himself to jurisprudential references, but rather expanded to include books of Tafsir (Quranic exegesis), Hadith (Prophetic traditions), language, and Aqidah (Islamic creed). This book is considered an important reference in Usul al-Fiqh for its deep analysis of jurisprudential issues, along with an explanation of their foundations and ramifications.
